When moving, one of the most important factors is the availability and location of major employers. Many people moving to Washington and the Pacific Northwest are already being transferred within their own company, many are military, and some move to Washington to be close to family, but some people would just like to move to the beautiful pacific Northwest Hood Canal area and the first thing they might do before moving is to start looking for job opportunities.
On this page you will find information on the major employers in the Puget Sound area of Washington State. Some are closer than others, some require a commute but allow you that "down-shifting" time. With the I-5 corridor, Hwy 3, our wonderful ferry system, and the second span of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge being built, commuting can be a comfortable and relaxing time.
In the immediate vicinity there is the military bases of the Bremerton Naval Shipyard, Bangor Submarine Base, and Keyport Naval Torpedo Station. A little farther away, just outside of Olympia, about an hour commute, depending on traffic, is McCord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis Army Base.
Simpson Timber Company and Mill is about thirty minutes away, while Weyerhauser is a little longer commute.
If you are in the forestry line, the Department of Natural Resources is right here. We have lots of forests, parks and trails for various activities and for the sportsmen. We also have the Salmon Recovery project along with the Wetlands project for conservationists.
There are many that cross the Puget Sound and commute from the Kitsap Peninsula including North Mason County, to Boeing or Todd's Shipyard in the Seattle area, as well as many other jobs with maybe smaller employers.
There are many retailers within the area as well. Within 30 to 40 minutes there is the Kitsap Mall in Silverdale Washington, Towne Square of Port Orchard, and Tacoma Mall, not to mention all the smaller employers.
If you're a writer or reporter you might be interested in our local newspaper, The Sun Newspaper, Bremerton Washington. The Puget Sound area is renowned for it's famous authors, such as best-selling romance novelist Debbie Macomber and True Crime writer Anne Rule.
Whatever you may be looking for, I'm sure you will find it in Mason County Washington, or close by!
